Disability History Month is here – what Volleyball England has planned

Today is the beginning of Disability History Month – and Volleyball England is keen to celebrate by spotlighting sitting volleyball and some of its incredible players.

Running from 20th November to 20th December, the theme for 2025 is Disability, Life and Death, which aims, primarily, to challenge the negative attitudes and practices towards disabled people that still persist.

Over the next four weeks, Volleyball England is keen use sitting volleyball as a vehicle to highlight the determination and strength of disabled people who play the sport, and how many have needed to overcome misguided perceptions of what they are capable of.

It also hopes to inspire sufficiently to entice more people from all backgrounds and walks of life – disabled or not – to take up what is a compelling and truly inclusive sport.

Among the things to look out for over the coming days and weeks include video interviews with sitting volleyball players as they talk about the challenges they have faced and how sitting volleyball has helped them.

Also featured will be podcasts by That Volleyball Guy Luke Wiltshire chatting to key figures in the sport, coverage of December’s Sitting Grand Prix and A Day in the Life of a Sitting Volleyball Player.

You can also access a selection of resources, including a Sitting Volleyball Starter Pack, put together by the Volleyball England Foundation, and guides on inclusive communications and how clubs can engage diverse communities.

The month will also see the launch of a new Sitting Volleyball Newsletter produced by Volleyball England, which is to be sent out each quarter.

“Following on from last year’s coverage of Disability History Month, we are pleased to once again give it our full support,” said John Worrall Volleyball England’s Project Lead for Sitting Volleyball.

“There are some wonderful people in the sport of sitting, and they don’t want to feel patronised or underestimated. They just want to play and enjoy themselves in a welcoming environment.

“Hopefully, the content that is put out this month will ultimately galvanise and inspire people, whether that’s to increase understanding or come along to a sitting session and give it a go”
